Rejoicing, I visualise what changes this deluge will bring to our church gardens, hedges and lawns. The parched crisp brown grass will be revived to become a cover of green. The flowering Jacaranda will spread a carpet of fallen purple below its outstretched branches covered with fresh ferny leaves. The tall bare shrubs will send out shoots to overshadow the plants beneath from the searing summer heat. The straggly hedges may thicken to be trimmed into shape. The flower seedlings I optimistically planted, may survive to bloom.
I reflect on our dry and thirsty land. The water supply for our city is under threat, as the reservoir dam has dropped to a record low of 35% capacity. Restrictions on watering are impractical – hand held hosing three days a week between 7.00pm and 7.00am only. In the evening it is too dark and dangerous to water. Two snakes have been seen near the front hedge, on the move from the dry bush creek bed close by.
My early morning rising will have a stay on this my allocated watering day. There's no need to rush to the church, to hose the struggling small flower beds I so hopefully planted. There is no cause to fret that there is no water to spare for the withering grass.
As I listen to the heavy outpouring of rain from above, my thankfulness increases as hope rises that the planned total ban on the watering of gardens will not come into force. I prayerfully beseech our heavenly provider for the dams to be filled. And pray for the farmer’s seeds to sprout into crops to rescue their lives from financial and emotional despair.
How wonderful that you heard my prayerful plea “Lord, please send the rain!” But Lord, I remind you that you exhorted us to pray for our spiritually parched nation, “Ask ye of the Lord rain in the time of the latter rain,” (KJV Zec 10:1). What heavenly sounds await us when the spiritual rain falls! The drumming of men, women and children’s voices bringing forth an anthem of praise to our Lord.
