As a small child, a visit with my grandmother was an escape. It was always as if I had tiptoed into a secret garden full of acceptance and beauty. I remember slipping my hand into hers, softened with time and wisdom. She knew what moral teachings were absent from my daily life. She would softly impart her wisdom. I hoped that the words she spoke would be the key to open my own secret garden.
We often picked fruit and flowers from her garden. She would always say, “You know what kind of plant it is when you can see the fruit!” I often thought to myself how silly this sounded. We picked from these plants every year, and I had all but memorized what they were. Finally, I suspect she waited some time for this, I asked her why. “Nina, why do you keep telling me that we will know the plant by its fruit? You know what all these plants are even without the fruit!” I saw a familiar smile come over her face. She sat down on the bench with me, and put her arm around me. “Child, you will know everything by its fruit. Others will know you by your fruit. The fruit is the most important part of the plant. Without it, the plant is a waste.”
We sat in the garden quietly, and I pondered what she had said, not understanding her fully. In those next weeks she began to teach me from the bible. We first read about fruit. My heart opened to hear about the strength of a tree growing beside the stream, and its bountiful fruit. That tree, in our studies, morphed into the heart of a Christian that was fed from the word of God.
I worried in my young mind that my fruit might not produce. I asked my Nina “What is your fruit, Nina?” Her laugh often was followed by a smothering hug. As she squeezed me and kissed my head, she replied “You are my fruit!”
I never forgot those precious days. There were countless other lessons learned. The very fruit that she produced in her obedience to God was what brought me up, and gave me hope.
