One I could never afford.
How did I get here?
My memory is so vague
I remember a journey
And straying into the wrong part of town.
Then the men surrounding me
Demanding all I had
Then because they were not satisfied
The fists and the kicks
And the pain.
And as I lay on the ground
Left for dead.
I remember people passing by
A priest, a local official
Many others passed by
And ignored me.
And then he came
He who was my enemy.
A part of the people
Who bombed my city.
And he turned aside
But only to get help
To call for his friends
To get an ambulance.
He came to the hospital too
And stayed with me there
Until bandaged and sore
I was released.
And yet I had nowhere to go
So he took me
To a place I would be safe
And so I sit in this hotel room
Reflecting on an old, old story
Could it have meaning today?
