“Why Lord?” His sorrow laden voice called as he turned the key over in his hands, looking from door to door, seeking the room chosen for him. Like Job in the Bible, he had lost everything.
Carrying a few remaining belongings in a waterlogged backpack, the traveler turned to face room 723. A deep sigh escaped his throat as he held back the tears that stung his eyes and opened the door to his current refuge. Not a fancy room, but it was dry. A single bed with a green ivy coverings filled his vision. How long had it been since he slept? Tonight he would sleep and pray that he would find himself back home with his family. He would awaken to find the past two weeks were simply part of an elaborate nightmare. He sat on the edge of the bed and let the tears flow. After releasing his sorrows, he began to pray.
“Father, I know you have a purpose. I don’t understand it, but I trust in you.” his heart cried out. “I need to feel your presence and comfort Lord.” He left the prayer open ended and began to unpack his belongings. He walked to the small dresser, scratched from age and use. Opening the top drawer, his eyes were drawn to the black Gideon Bible that was set in the corner. He placed his bundle into the drawer and gently picked up the Bible and cradled it to his chest. Feeling the emotions begin to form again, the traveler sat down and opened the book. Six little words stared back at him. Six words of comfort.
“Thank you Father!” he spoke aloud as the tears of sorrow had turned to tears of joy. Six words: “Dedicated in honor of Fred Wallace” were neatly engraved in front of the Gideon. He remembered his church asking for Gideon memorial donations, and five years ago, he had made several donations in honor of his father, Fred Wallace. He had died on July 23. 7-23. The Lord had made it clear that he had everything under control, even the smallest details. The traveler fell asleep that night, peacefully knowing his prayer had been answered. The Lord was with him in the midst of the storm.
