What is it that determines Inspiration? To what do we credit the infamous writer’s block? To the one we render the highest praise. The other we consider our blight. I’ve pondered these questions and I’ve come to a different point of view.
I’m certainly no expert on the subject, yet I do have an opinion or two.
Why is it, we look to the block as an enemy. This undoubtedly the Con,
we try conjuring up some creative and life changing verse. We sit or stand, walk or lie down, all in an attempt to get the creative juices flowing.
I don’t know about you, but I resort to reading, listening to music, even re-reading some of my more memorable works only to sit with pen in hand and a wordless page of white. What causes such a void, in a literary mind?
Is it physical, mental emotional, or just something I ate? We become miserable, even testy, agitated and somewhat blank. I wonder though, is this really so bad? Perhaps an occasional blockage is just what us writers need most.
Now Inspiration, yes here is the Pro, that all of us welcome and adore.
Maybe it’s just a word or a sentence, a line from a song, the touch of a new- born babes soft cheek. The words seem to flow on the winds of ease. We write and become engrossed in our venture. We climb into our Characters head and heart. These are the times that we all hold so dear. Being inspired to write is like breath to a lung. Oh, yes, could it get any better than this!
I believe that the Pro-con matter is very much like Siamese twins. Both Inspiration/Block carry both of these traits. Think about it? When the blockage does cease and we become inspired anew, it’s like a breath of fresh air. So just maybe the horrid writer’s block is an angel in disguise?
Forgive me for resorting to an old cliché, but I thought it suited the point that I’m trying to make. “Absence makes the heart grow fonder.”
Why not welcome the dreaded block as a blank boost of reality, to a soon coming Creative masterpiece?
I think these Siamese twins are growing on me! What do you think?
