We see mother’s love in action following Solomon’s wise proclamation; in Moses’ mother who hid him in the bulrushes; and in the barren women in the Bible who longed for motherhood with such intensity that they were willing to promise their babes to God if only he would allow them the unequaled joy that comes from carrying life in one’s womb and holding it to one’s breast.
Does Solomon address abortion? No, but he does say this:
2 And I declared that the dead,
who had already died,
are happier than the living,
who are still alive.
3 But better than both
is he who has not yet been,
who has not seen the evil
that is done under the sun. (NIV Eccl 4:2-3)
3 … I say that a stillborn child is better off than he. 4 It comes without meaning, it departs in darkness, and in darkness its name is shrouded. 5 Though it never saw the sun or knew anything, it has more rest than does that man- 6 even if he lives a thousand years… (NIV Eccl 6:3-6) Solomon is talking about a man who has a lot of things but cannot enjoy them.
Can a Christian be ‘pro-choice?’ I used to be. I honestly believed it was better for a child to never enter the world than to enter it unwanted and that it was better for a mother to have an abortion that to ruin her life. Then the Holy Spirit revealed to me a huge hole left in the heart of a mother who has aborted her child—a hole so deep that it is almost beyond healing. The father of all lies has long fingers and the hole is rent not only in the heart of the mother, but in the hearts of her entire family.
Conception, however, is only the result of the sin of ‘wrong’ sex. Anyone who has sex outside of a marriage between one man and one woman is just as guilty of the sin as the unfortunate woman who became pregnant. Thank God, our loving Father, that he is able to heal any wound. But only he can heal wounds of this magnitude.
The Holy Spirit also showed me a picture of our once glorious nation now suffering from a huge hole in its heart as well. From 1973 through 2005, more than 45 million legal abortions occurred. We have slain the brothers and sisters of a whole generation. Siblings that could have helped them bear the huge burden now being put on our society by the aging of the once self-sufficient baby boomers (whose parents didn’t have a choice when faced with these situations because they conceived pre Roe.v.Wade.)
My heart aches for us who did not want to suffer the consequences of our sin, so swept them out of our lives, participating in the rampant spread of our own heart disease. I thank God that he still loves us and is willing to heal us if we will turn our hearts back to Him.
My prayer:
Father, let us return to the faith of our founding fathers, faith in You, the one and only true God and the truth of Your word. Help us to once again trust in You and obey Your word, for there is no other way to heal our hearts. Help us to teach our children the wrongs and rights about sex according to Your word so that abortion may become a moot point and so that they will never have to make the choices we had to make due to our sins. In Jesus name, I ask. Amen.
