“Come on, girls, stop horsing around.” We slid out and Dad locked the car.
The next morning, I got dressed and went to get my…”Uh oh”. I dashed to the Rambler at top speed. My satchel was on the front seat. I tried the doors. They were all locked.
I ran to the door aggravated, “Anna, where’s Dad?”
“Yo Daddy is sleepin’ girl. Whach you want?”
“My satchel is locked up in the d*** Rambler and the bus is coming!”
Oops.
“Whach you jus say chile? If the bus waddunt comin’ I’d rinse yo mouth out wit da soap!” I ran to the bus minus homework. Anna yelled, “Yo Daddy is gonna tan yo hide girl!” as the bus pulled away.
I was dead meat. I screamed at the maid and swore. I hoped that Anna would forget. The zero in Math went to the background. My face reddened. Anna heard me swear, I yelled at her, in the driveway. Oh, I was so dead.
When I came home, Anna announced, “Girl, yo in big trouble. You jus wait til yo Daddy gets home. He already knows cuz I tells ‘im when he gets up this mahnin’.”
I grabbed Hannah and ran to my room ashamed.
“Chile, you get that dog out yo room! You know yo Mama don’t allow the dog in the upstazz!” I shut the door and hid under the covers while Hannah hid under the bed. Anna opened the door, “Dem blankets ain’t gonna save yo tail!” as she left me to my misery.
Hannah whimpered. “Hannah, be quiet!” I smacked her on the nose.
“Be quiet, they will hear you!” She rolled and whimpered and then she was quiet.
Sniff, sniff…uh oh…”Hannah, you went number two! Bad dog!” I was double dead.
I heard the door then Dad’s booming baritone, “Tina! Get down here!”
I walked down to the foyer and feared his disapproval more than his hand.
“I’m not very happy with you! Go sit down and don’t move!” he said.
My funeral flashed before me as I walked to the living room. The tears came. I wailed and sniveled; my breath skipped like rocks over a creek bed.
Dad sat down and said, “First, you’re getting a spanking for yelling at Anna. You know better than to talk to your elders that way.”
“Yes, Daddy.”
“The second spanking is for swearing.”
“Yes, Daddy.”
“Where did you hear such talk?”
“From people.”
“How did your satchel get in the car?”
“I was playing in there.”
“You have no one to be angry at but you. You were not supposed to be in the car. It’s locked for a reason. You could knock it out of gear.”
“Yes, Daddy.”
I bent over and took my fatal blows.
“Go to the kitchen,” he said. He grabbed the Dawn, squirted some in his hand and rubbed it on my teeth and tongue.
“There. Now, the next time you think of saying something a little girl shouldn’t say, think of how that soap tastes.”
“God is not happy with little girls that get angry and say bad words.”
“Yes, Daddy.”
“Now go on to bed. No TV and you are never allowed around that car again. Do you hear me?”
“Yes, Daddy.”
“Now, come on over here.” I walked over and he put his arms around me, “Honey, I love you but when you do things wrong you have to pay the price.”
“I know. I love you too, Daddy. Don’t be mad at me.”
“I’m not. Now get on up to bed.”
I headed upstairs soapy mouth, bruised pride and scorched tail. I managed to get Hannah and her number two out of my room before Mom got home.
“But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.”
James 3:8 KJV
