I am confused. I am a member of the Senior School Debating Society and have been chosen to take part in the next debate. The moot: It's a colourful world!
So what, you might ask. Well, the problem is that I am on the opposing team. I have to propose that it is not a colourful world. I am supposed to prove it, argue it, and convince the audience that it is not a colourful world.
As I think about it the less I feel able to oppose the moot, and I am not sure what I should do. Its just a debate, just an argument if you like, but the more I consider it the more I seem to be confronted with colour.
I live in a country that is full of it. Flowers of every hue can be found in gardens and parks. They are bought to decorate homes and adorn banquet tables. Shades of red, yellow and blue abound.
Artists get awards for painting them. Their work hangs in many halls and homes, adding colour to the surroundings.
Then there are birds. These are not so evident, but they can be seen if you look for them. Some of these too are very colourful. If you have ever seen the tiny humming bird you will know what I mean.
What about fruits and vegetables. Oranges, apples, grapes, plums, carrots, pumpkin, peas and beans, and the list could go on. They all have colour which cannot be hid.
The other day I saw a beautiful monarch butterfly. Just one of many varieties.
Can I deny these colours? The other evening there was a glorious sunset. It glowed like fire across the western sky. Colour, rich red colour!
Flowers, birds, fruits. What about the ocean. Yes, it too has colour. Sometimes a rich blue as the sun shines down upon it, or it can be cold grey and angry looking under a cloudy sky.
When my opponents present these facts can I prove they are not true, that it’s not a colourful world.
I have a friend who lives in a big city. The buildings are tall and the sunshine hardly reaches the ground. It is somewhat drab, maybe you could say colourless. People live in high rise buildings and they do not have gardens of colourful flowers. Could I present this to my opponent as proof that it is not a colourful world?
Yet the people who live in such a place have colour too. They buy flowers at the flower shop, and they decorate their homes with colour. They dress in bright colourful clothes.
And what about people? They come in all shades of colour. We used to sing about them in Sunday School as red and yellow black and white!
I know it is only a debate, and I have taken part in many such before, but this time I just cannot bring myself to oppose the moot. I am a Christian and I believe in creation by God. He is the source of all these beautiful colours. Just consider the rainbow, His promise in the sky!
As a child I used to sing:
All things bright and beautiful
All creatures great and small.
All things wise and wonderful,
The Lord God made them all.
God created a beautiful colourful world. It is still so, but it is overshadowed as the result of sin, yet the colours are there for all to see. How can I prove it otherwise?
Yes, I am confused, or should I say I was confused. Now I know what to do. I must withdraw from the debate, even if they drop me from the team for a time.
It will be interesting to see how the moot is opposed. But as for me, my conscience is clear, I am convinced without a shadow of doubt that it is a beautiful colourful world!

I wonder if this would have even more impact if you wrote it in a more narrative form--with your character actually interacting with members of his team, and attempting his difficult argument in a real debate. Just a thought.
Thanks for reminding us of so many beautiful, colorful things.
