The dark, depths of depression was overwhelming, stifling and all-consuming. It defined who I was and determined my destiny. I felt myself being dragged deeper and deeper, spiralling into a vortex of negativity, self-doubt and despair.
“What is life about?” I asked the naked walls of my hospital room, my retreat. “What a pitiful world this is. I want out!” I shouted into the emptiness surrounding me. I felt desperation deep within me and started sobbing like I have never done before.
I grudgingly took hold of the book being handed to me by a plain-faced nurse in a blue and white uniform. “What is this?” I asked, wishing she would leave me alone.
“Open it and you shall see” she answered in a strangely surreal voice. “It will answer your questions”.
She vanished into the stark, sterile halls of the hospital.
Wiping the tears from my eyes, I groped around for the book which I had carelessly tossed somewhere on my bed. Finding it, I sat up and curiously stared at the pages which fell open in front of me.
I cautiously started reading, trying to make sense of the words. I found myself hungrily absorbing more and more of this book, hours passing by without me even noticing.
Darkness had descended by the time I finally forced myself to put the book down. I got out of bed and opened the door to the outside balcony. Staring up at the star-lit sky, I felt a lightness slowly descend on me. I felt as though the night sky was emitting beams of strong light rays, inviting me into its arms, caressing me with its silent strength and powerful energy.
“What’s happening to me?” I asked the silent night. “I feel like I’m floating” I whispered up at the sky.
At that moment, the night sky exploded with the brilliance of colour! Fireworks, in red, orange, yellow, green, blue, lit up the sky and rained down on me. Never before had I witnessed such beauty and splendour. “Surely I’ve seen fireworks before?” I asked myself. “But I’ve never seen such brilliant colours before” I carried on the conversation with myself. Everything around me had been so grey, dull and lifeless for such a long time that I felt unfamiliar with the concept of colour. I felt as though I had been blind and at that moment had been given the gift of sight!
Whatever it was, it felt wonderful! I felt a sense of peace for the first time in so many months. Like a child unwrapping long-awaited Christmas gifts, I ran back to my bed, grabbed the book and rifled through the pages, desperately searching for whatever it was that had made me feel this sense of liberation.
I stared at the cover of the book for what seemed like hours. The title sprung out at me, leaving me confused and shocked. “The Holy Bible” I muttered to myself over and over again.
I must have fallen asleep at that moment because I woke up with the Bible in my hands and a cheerful nurse at my side. I squinted at the light streaming through the windows. I vaguely remembered the events of the previous night.
I jumped out of bed, startling the poor nurse and flung open the door. I was welcomed by such splendour; it made me dizzy with delight. The trees were a gorgeous green which I had never seen before; the sun shone its golden rays on my face; splashes of orange and yellow adorned the brilliantly blue sky. The world was awash with colour and I was at the centre of all this glory.
I drank it all in with an unquenchable thirst. “Thank you, Lord God for the beauty of life”, I heard myself utter these words, followed by “Thank you, Lord God for bringing color and meaning back to my life”. I felt embraced by the Holy Spirit. Thus began my journey with God.

I'd recommend spacing between paragraphs, and toning down adjectives and adverbs for a leaner, more contemporary feel.
Wonderful lesson in this story!
