"She can't use THAT doll as baby Jesus!" the woman hissed. I hugged my brown doll to my chest loyally. In all my seven years, I had never encountered such hostility toward my adorable baby. With wide eyes, I looked up into the woman's stern face. My little heart was
crushed. I couldn't see the issue, but I knew one thing: I would never abandon the doll just because it wasn't white!
This year's Christmas pageant found me as Mary, and much to both of our chagrin, my brother was cast as Joseph. An elaborate pine stable was built on the stage, with the still-green hay poking out of the little manger. What could be more perfect than my favorite doll playing the part of the little baby Jesus?
After the dress rehearsal, I told my father about the upsetting comments made by the lady about my doll. My brother piped in that he had even overhearing her saying the doll was ugly! After drying my tears, Daddy sat me down and explained simply that the real baby Jesus probably was brown. He told me that though Jesus is depicted on stamps and in storybooks as a white man, it is more likely that he was darker skinned since he was born in the Middle East.
Moreover, he explained that it didn't really matter what color Jesus was, because he came to save everybody in the world, regardless of their color.
Though simplistic, this lesson taught me to deeply respect and love all people that Jesus came to save, no matter what color they are!
Needless to say, Mary laid the little brown baby doll in the scratchy hay of the manger that Christmas. Yes, a scenery-tree toppled over that year, a wise man forgot his lines and my little white tights were all bunchy around my knees, but an amazing lesson was learned that Christmas that will forever impact my life.

I'd love to see this expanded--to see more dialog with the woman, and to see how the brown baby Jesus impacted her as the program played out. You're a good story-teller--tell us the rest of the story!
