Pulled from her reveries, Marcella’s arm was tugged gently by her new friend Thyme. “Grehan, the storyteller, is going to tell us a tale.” Marcella’s eyes fell upon the man whom Thyme spoke of, now standing in front of those gathered around.
When the storyteller spoke a hush came over the group. “It’s a story you want?” He paused to wait for a response which he received. “Then I will tell you the story of the bandit.”
Marcella, hearing the excited whispers from around her, realized that this was not a new story but a favorite. She found Thyme as enthralled as the younger children and smiled.
The story was brief telling of a bandit who left and never returned to his love. The storyteller smiled lovingly, when he was finished, at the children that surrounded him until his dark brown eyes finally rested on Marcella. “We tell our stories to the children so that they will never be forgotten. You come from a country far away, you must have a story to tell us.”
Suddenly inspired, Marcella smiled. “I do.”
“I will tell you a story about a great king who loved his people more then anything. He gave them everything they could want asking only in return to follow his laws. At first the people were happy, the land flourished, and the kingdom was strong.
But as people seem to do, they became restless and greedy. They wanted more, they wanted the laws to change, they wanted what other countries had. So they made an agreement with a powerful warlord, land, riches, whatever they wanted with little laws to govern them in turn for their pledge of service.
At first things were fine but eventually the people realized that the warlord had lied to them and they wanted to return to their king but the agreement they had signed bound them to the warlord as slaves. The only way to leave was to buy their freedom, and the price was their lives.
And so time went on and the people grew more and more miserable. The food grew sparse and the warlord was harsh and unkind…”
Marcella paused to see if her story had captured her audience’s attention. The wide eyes staring back at her lit with the fire’s light, told her she had.
“The kind king had an only son, his heart and joy. The prince was like his father, good, kind, and fair. He too loved the people that had left his father’s kingdom and was filled with grief at how they were suffering.
And so the prince left his father’s kingdom and went to stand before the evil warlord to ask for his people’s freedom.
The warlord hated the king and his son and found though, that he might be able to destroy them, so he told the prince that the only way to free his people was to pay their price for freedom with his own life.
The prince’s love for his people was so great that he agreed to pay their debt with his life in exchange for their freedom...”
A little voice shouted from the crown of faces before Marcella, “and did he?”
Marcella nodded as she went on. “Yes, he gladly took the place of his people, paid the price of their freedom. In the warlords arrogance he didn‘t simply take the prince‘s life, he publicly mocked the prince, beat him and killed before all the people as a show of how powerful he was. But what the warlord didn’t know was that he could not truly kill the prince because the prince’s love for his people was stronger then death. So the prince rose from the dead and joined the living once more but this time not warlord, nor anyone could touch him for he was made different then what he was before.”
A little girl spoke out. “What happened then?”
She paused and smiled. “The prince went back to his father’s kingdom and to this day he protects all mankind that seek sanctuary within his lands and, because of his sacrifice, he gives freedom to all.”
It was in the warm brown eyes of Thyme, her friend, that Marcella realized the opportunity that she had been given to share of her prince and her king.
“That was beautiful.” Thyme whispered as she wiped away a tear.
