“Mommy, why does it have to rain? “, he questioned, in disappointment. His mother replied, “ It rains because God needs to water all the plants. “
“ Well, how long does he have to keep the hose on? Joey whimpered. His mother was careful to hide her laughter. She didn’t want little Joey to think she wasn’t taking him seriously. After all, that was how we watered the plants.
His mother climbed onto the couch next to Joey and put her arms around his little body. “You know,” she said, “ A hose would be much too short to reach all the plants God needs to water. He has a special way of doing it and he knows just how much each plant needs for it to grow.”
Joey looked at his mother; curiously, “ I grow, does God need to water me? “ His mother let out a little giggle this time. “Would you like to get your purple boots on, and go outside, so God can water you? “, She asked.
A smile quickly grew across Joey’s face as he climbed off the couch and ran to find the purple boots. Joey’s purple boots were his favorite for splashing in puddles and he was sure there would be puddles.
When Joey came back with the boots, his mother was waiting for him. She had her coat on, and she was holding out a small purple raincoat for Joey. As he slipped his arms into the coat, he asked, “ Do you think I will be bigger when I come back in?”
“I don’t know”, his mother replied, “ I think you will definitely be wetter though.” she said with a smile.
Joey’s purple boots took him through every puddle. His mother watched as he splashed in each one, letting out squeals of excitement when he landed. She thought he reminded her of a little purple frog.
It had stopped raining and it was time to go in. As Joey followed his mother to the door, he informed her that he thought he was bigger now. His mother reached down and picked him up. “Well then big boy, make sure you thank God for the rain.” She kissed him, set him down and they closed the door.
Joey spent the rest of the day feeling a bit taller and that night, when he said his prayers, he made sure he thanked God for the rain.
