The freshly-washed sheet, full of sunshine, is pulled tight across the bed with the exactness of a trained nurse. The corners are neatly tucked away, and every wrinkle is smoothed, to await the next patient.
The Greek village, with its scattering of white-washed houses perched high on a cliff, dazzles the eye. The deep blue of the Aegean Sea, transforms the simple homes to a postcard picture.
And before me the blank page awaits my touch ... unsullied by any thought, full of potential. What words will jump forth to leap across the screen? Fat words, full of juice and bite, like hairy caterpillars? Squirmy ones that wriggle free, and r – u – n across the page? Or those that come with layers of polish, carefully sought and shaped?
They're only marks of black on white, yet variously they paint ... water-colors, in soft light, bold oils embracing LIFE, or "abstracts" seeking truth within, with wafty brush-strokes, gently smudged. Paint dabs that speak with different voice, transforming the sheer white.
What impression will they leave, for those who follow after? Crisp and sharp, giving direction, as imprints in fresh snow? Or muddy thoughts like dirty slush, that make one slip and slide?
The clean fresh sheet, starched stiff and fragrant, is ready for the need. Is my heart open, cleansed and clear, to be a faithful scribe? Can I hear what He would say, and pass it on to others?
The village with its bright-white homes, is the place where life is lived. Day in, day out, with hopes and fears, our neighbors face their worlds. Though on the outside "pretty", it may be a thin veneer. What word of hope can our lives bring to help them face the glare?
The joy of a fresh white page ... as we sit before Him, words spring from deep reserves. And as they run, this way and that, as a river to the sea, may our hearts be led by Him, to find new ways of seeing.
And so our white be pierced by Light, to thus reflect His radiant White.
