He was a tiny little thing when I first brought him home; kind of scrawny looking with big blue eyes and long whiskers that extended far beyond his little face. The most unusual feature about him was that his fur was pure white from head to toe with no other markings. The little pads on the bottom of his paws were soft and pink, as were the insides of his pointy, little ears. He was such an angelic and pure-looking feline, I wanted to give him a name that reflected his appearance. “Snowball” seemed too cute. “Angel” was too feminine since he was a male. I decided I would give it more time before choosing in order to give him just the right name.
Over the next few days I watched him play, eat and sleep and tried to see something that would spark an original and unique name for him. Nothing came to me with any certainty, until one night after setting him down in front of his dish I noticed him put his paws around both sides of it and start growling as he ate! Did he think someone was going to take it away? He gulped down his food as if it were his first and only meal of the day (which it wasn’t!). I stood amazed watching the appetite on this little guy! When he was finished he sat to the side meticulously (as cats do) licking his paws and washing his face. He looked quite satisfied, not just by the contented look on his face, but the roundness of his protruding belly! It looked like it had grown twice its size just after this one meal! I went to pick him up, and as I pressed my hands gently around his middle to lift him, I actually heard a faint “poof” of air exhaled from his rear quarters! Then, a not-so-faint smell began to emanate the room! “Oh, you stink!” I exclaimed, holding him out away from my nose. He looked at me as if he had no idea what my problem with him was. Then it came to me exactly what to name my gassy, little friend . . . “Stinky”! I repeated it to him several times, observing his reaction each time. He seemed to accept it not only as a matter of truth, but his claim to fame as well. Far from being a name that reflected the majesty of this beautiful and perfectly white cat, “Stinky” became the most obvious and appropriate choice. And, needless to say, he has lived up to it ever since!
