It was the day of his mum's funeral. John wondered what his mum would have thought about him having to wear such sombre clothes.
He remembered all the good times he had spent with his mum. She had been a fun loving Christian who loved bright colours. She had supported and cared for John with so much love that his young heart was breaking at his loss. And now he had to go to her funeral dressed in black because his dad had said that it was a mark of respect for her.
John went to his room and looked in the wardrobe and found the rainbow coloured tie that his mum had given him last Christmas. He remembered her words when he had opened the present.
"John, this tie has all the colours of the rainbow - Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet. I want you to think of a rainbow every time you wear it because the rainbow is a sign from God and it is also a symbol of hope."
John explained to his dad why he didn't want to wear the black tie and why the rainbow coloured tie was so important to him. John's dad wiped a tear from his eye and said "I think that your mum would be very happy and proud of you today. You have helped me to remember that we should celebrate your mum's life with colour as well as grieve for her. Of course you must wear the rainbow tie as it symbolises God's love and gives us hope for the future."
