I was enjoying a break with my third cup of coffee and the quietness of the hour. My eyes, relieved from close work, were enjoying the break, too.
It was a subtle sound which got my attention. Click ... click ... click ... click. I slowly raised my head and looked up. Looked around. Not loud, but click ... click ... click.
Couldn’t see a thing but the shrubs on the periphery of the yard, and the grass which needed mowing.
Be still - don’t move - be quiet - forget the coffee - you can warm it later.
Click ... click - He knows I’m here - he’s very cautious. He’s concealed somewhere in those shrubs. I freeze any movement - forget about finding him - focus on the object of his attention - a bird feeder with sunflower seeds in it.
Suddenly, there he is! Which bush he was in, I don’t know. There’s a flash of a red wing and a red bird - not large - but richly plumed, is on the wing, and he lands on the feeder. We call him the Cardinal. He’s magnificent in his red plumage. He even has a formation of feathers on the top and back of his head resembling the miter of the cardinal in the Catholic Church. We’re friends, this cardinal and I, but only at a distance. He knows I won’t hurt him, but he’s not in the business of being friends.
He lingers a moment or two pecking at the seeds and keeping aware of his surroundings, especially me.
It’s a moment I treasure.
He flies off to pursue his life, and I return to mine.
