The warm evening breeze ebbed and peaked like waves, a kind of sweet grapey smell wafted through the cracks of the old blue shack. “Maria, God is good, I have faith that one day he will heal you.” Safta rubbed my right foot with some sort of oil, I don’t know what it is but it feels good. “Tomorrow you will be able to walk a little better because of this you’ll see.” Sadness crept into Saftas voice as she fell silent; probably in an effort to hide it she was always doing that.
I could barely contain myself, all night since dinner I was so excited! One of my best friends in the whole world told me a secret. She told me that she heard that somebody named Jesus was coming! “Safta who’s Jesus?” She looked at me still silent at first “Jesus is a man who is Hebrew just like us; only some say he is the son of God.” “God has a son?” I asked. “What does he look like?” Safta put the oil away and tucked my foot back under the blanket. “Shh, little one don’t fill your head up with so much thought; you are only eight, right now go to sleep. “But Safta my friends tell me he tells stories like you do.” Safta smiled and walked out of the room.
“Maria hurry!” My best friend screamed. Sunlight crept through the same cracks the wind had; it was morning. “Hurry and run as fast as you can the man Jesus is coming down the road!” I jumped out of bed and for a minute I could stand without my walking stick; but only for a minute. I fell on the floor and pulled myself as quietly as I could to my stick I couldn’t let safta hear that I was awake. Once I got that stick under my arm I used it to push the back door open. “Run Maria, quick he’s coming!” “I hate this stick! I’m going to miss Jesus!” The walking stick kept getting stuck into the soft areas between the rocks. “There he is!” someone yelled. “Jesus wait for me! I’m coming!” When I finally got to the road I could not see his face, He was surrounded by all my friends.
Jesus is on his way to Jericho, I heard someone whisper. Giggles erupted as I saw him tenderly touch every ones forehead except for mine. “Jesus what about me?” I shouted, “Touch me too!” “Oh my!” he turned around! He actually heard me! I closed my eyes just in case he did know it was me who screamed. I heard a voice; the best voice even better then my Saftas voice. I reached out and hugged him as I felt him touch my head because I know this voice is Jesus. “Truly I say to you, whoever does not accept and receive and welcome the kingdom of God like a little child shall not in any way enter it.” I opened my eyes and saw him walking down the road again.
“Did you see that? I just touched Jesus!” I ran to tell Safta as fast as I could. “Safta I just saw Jesus!” “Maria where is your walking stick?” “I don’t know I left it on the road.” Safta grabbed my head to her chest in a bear hug. “Thank you man named Jesus for healing my baby!”
The bible verse Luke18:17 amplified version, Safta is Hebrew for grandma
