Grace had her first glimpse of autumn when she was five. They had travelled a long way from home . Now she was fifty-five. Yet autumn wonder still reverberates within. Still the deep calls unto deep resulting in delight. She paused before shutting the car door to glance up at the canopy of red and yellow and gold. It flickered in the breeze like a fire. “Ahh God you ‘doned’ good.” She smiled at the memory. Family lore would have it that young Gracie had pressed her five year old freckled face against the glass window in the back seat of her father’s Zephyr and cried ‘Ahh Daddy, God sure 'doned' good She wished she could linger. Inhale the pure breath of the liquid ambers but the pace of life was blowing her along like a winter wind. She slammed the car door and contented herself with an inward smile at her Creator and thanked him for poets who shared her delight in the…season of mist and mellow fruitfulness/ close bosom friend of the maturing sun.
It was only a glimpse. Of a woman behind the shop window. Grace had rushed right by before cognition set in. Nanoseconds perhaps, but now she found herself scrambling to replay the moment, rework the impression into something more acceptable. Reactions however, don’t run through the filter of acceptable and Grace slowed her steps to deal with the impact.
The woman appeared to be just a little older than herself. She was looking straight at Grace. And a smile played around her mouth. Perhaps she’d just had a nice thought. She was not beautiful and autumn had set in making mellow the angles of her face, while her body, from what Grace had glimpsed, had softened a little from the bearing of fruit in seasons gone by. No it was nothing physical that caught the eye. It was a gentleness that radiated from within. Grace recognised in the instant that Jesus stood just beneath her skin.
“Ahh God I want You to shine out of me just like that. Please! Don’t You remember this morning God? How I cried out to You that I was not an effective witness. She is , oh holy God! Without saying a word that woman shares You with her world.”
“That is you Grace. Shine for Me.”
