Spring comes at just the right time, when we are weary of trudging through snow banks, dodging the snow plows as they race down the road blowing snow to the right of their large vehicles creating a large wave like feature, and wearing heavy clothing that seems to become heavier as the weeks wear on. With spring comes the first crocuses that seem to shyly expose themselves and then in boldness spring forth to proclaim their existence. The sky takes on a brighter blue, and the clouds become so large and fluffily that if you were to reach upward, you would be able to touch them. The days become warmer, and the nights still cling to the chill of winter. The Easter egg hunts begins after church, we are thrilled to see the little girls in new bonnets, and dresses tied with big fancy bows. The little boys with their new pants, shirts and small ties brighten the day as they and the little girls rush to find the colored eggs that have been hidden in easy places to find and cherish.
With summer comes the time for picnics, swimming, vacations, and renewing friendships that have been dormant during the cold parts of the year. The apple trees are in full bloom, with honey bee’s darting from one blossom to another. The soil has been tiled and the gardens planted. The willow tree in the front yards of neighbors are providing hiding places for young lovers, as they pledge to one another their undying love. The days become warmer, and on the lakes the fishermen are sitting in their boats waiting to catch the biggest fish of the year. The days are long, and beautiful shades of green are everywhere. Finally, the lazy days of summer began to grow shorter, and children began to look forward to school and seeing old friends. The gardens have been showing their wares, waiting to be harvested, and women gather together peeling apples, scalding tomatoes, plucking peas and carrots to begin canning for the coming winter.
Autumn begins and Fall brings the first days of school. Along the sidewalks are young boys and girls heading back to school. Backpacks of different design and colors adorn their backs, and everywhere are mothers taking their little one to first grade. There is a look of sadness on the face of mothers, and on the face of children are looks of fear. They will be away from home all day, not being able to stay at home with Mom.
Three Months later, school lets out for Thanksgiving, and families began to arrive for the big Thanksgiving Day parade, and then home for a table that holds all kinds of wonderful things to eat. There are games to play and the weather is still warm enough that the children can go outside to play, while Grandpas and Dads sit out on the veranda and enjoy the few hours they have left before one family or another leave. Saying goodbye, and promising to keep in touch until next year. Fall turns into Winter, and the seasons start again.
