“Gee Mom, what am I supposed to do for eight hours in the car?”
“Well, you could read a book, listen to music or draw. That would pass the time nicely,” she replied.
“We’ll also be making several stops along the way to sightsee.” Mom said cheerfully, as if that would peak my interest. What is it with parents and sightseeing? What is the big deal?
“Ok Mom, as long as we don’t take too long at these stops. It can be quite boring.”
“Where’s your sense of adventure?” Mom asked.
I shrugged my shoulders and settled into the car. A couple hours later, Dad pulled the car into a space at the entrance to a lake.
“Why are we here?” I asked.
“Well, it’s time for lunch and this is a beautiful place to enjoy it,” my father said.
As I rolled my eyes, mom added “It’s wonderful to take time out to revel in God’s creation.”
I had no comment and went straight to my lunch.
A funny thing happened while I sat there. I realized for the first time what peace is. It was amazingly quiet except for the occasional bird chirping or duck splashing on the lake. This “sightseeing” wasn’t so bad after all. Even a teenager needs a peaceful break every now and then.
“Larry, let’s go.”
Whoa, I was just drifting off to sleep. That certainly got my attention. Mom was loading our lunch basket back in the car and Dad was behind the wheel of the car, waiting patiently. I actually hurried my steps to the car, eagerly awaiting our next sightseeing stop.
Instead of reading through the next part of the trip, I began to stare out of the window as we rode along. The leaves of the trees had begun their autumn color change. The rainbow of reds, oranges and yellows blanketed the hills. Yes, this was reveling in God’s creation. What a beautiful world he made.
About an hour before we reached Grandma’s home place, we made another stop. The national aquarium is a favorite tourist spot for families. It’s definitely one of mine.
“Good choice Mom. I love this place.”
“Dad and I thought you would enjoy another visit here,” mom said.
My favorite part this time was the seal show. It was a new addition this year. The show was crowded, but we managed to snag some great seats.
It had been a full and rewarding day. I told my parents how I had initially dreaded the “sightseeing” on this trip. Then I told them how truly excited and surprised I had been about the entire day and how I had reacted to it. They understood. See, they were once teenagers too.
