Topic: Winter (the season) (08/13/09)
As seasons go, winter does not score well in the polls. Generally regarded as a necessary evil, it is usually relegated to third or fourth place depending on who you ask. Always the bridesmaid, never the bride….

But could we really live without it? Not at all! Winter is one of those inconveniences that you only appreciate when it’s gone. I lived in South Florida for a number of years and they only have one season there - tropical. But in spite of what the travel brochures tell us, perpetual summer does have its downside. Sure, it’s nice to walk in the surf in shorts on New Year’s Day, but 80 degrees and sunny 365 days a year does get old after a while. I remember looking forward my annual Thanksgiving pilgrimage to see my sisters in Georgia just so I could see dead grass and dead trees and get the privilege of wearing a jacket. That was actually a blessing to me!

Granted, my affinity for winter is not shared by everyone. In Middle Georgia, the winters are relatively mild and that gives them a certain charm. But that charm begins to dissipate as you move further north. I was traveling on business last year and flew to Buffalo, NY. Imagine my surprise to discover that the airport operates a fleet of snow blowers that are the size of the combines used to harvest cotton in Georgia. After seeing that, I appreciated the winters of my youth even more.

The debate is strictly philosophical, of course. In spite of its bad reputation, I doubt that winter is going anywhere. Global warming, if it indeed exists, may change the face of winter but will not likely make it obsolete. And this is good news for many people, particularly those working in industries that provide mittens or hot chocolate. Winter has its own sector in our economy and we would miss it sorely if it were to go the way of vinyl records and typewriters. Perhaps, for economic reasons alone, we should all move winter up to second place in the next poll. Just to let it know that we care.

good article. I lived near Cleveland, O for 33 yrs and then moved to central VA. I was tired of the blizzards and very short summers, springs, and falls. Here in Va we have long springs, humid, long summers, long falls, and thank goodness, short and mild winters. I wouldn't like it to always be summer either.
