“Mikhaila, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean for any of this to happen. It was a moment of weakness...” His voice broke and when I turned around I could see that he was fighting tears. A chill ran down my spine. I knew that I shouldn’t be acting like this but it was like something had taken a hold of me and I wasn’t in control anymore.
“A moment of weakness?” I was yelling now, “how dare you? You preach to me about honesty and integrity, faithfulness and purity. And for what, huh? Just for me to walk in on you and my best friend making out!” The tears were flowing now. I began to shake uncontrollably and Jason wrapped his arms around me tightly. I sobbed violently against his chest for a moment then pushed him away.
“I went over because she seemed upset; I didn’t know her parents weren’t home! I found her in her room crying and I only wanted to comfort her.”
“Yeah, I bet you did a pretty good job too.” I knew the sarcasm was not necessary; I could see he was just as confused as I was but it was the hurt talking.
“I let my guard down and I’m sorry. Please, Mikhaila, I don’t want to lose you.” His tone was sincere.
“Well, you should have thought of that before.” I walked over to the door and held it open. “Now please leave.” I watched him make his way through the snow; the tears came then in full force.
My heart ached. I felt betrayed and angry. I couldn’t formulate the words to pray; I was mad at God. How could he expose me to such a terrible pain? One night, my mom came into my room and noticed me staring at nothing in particular.
“Honey, you can’t go on like this.” She said as she sat on the edge of my bed.
“It hurts Ma. I love Jason so much but I don’t know if I can forgive him for doing this to me.”
“Doing what to you sweetie?” Her tone was so gentle, it calmed my frazzled nerves.
“For causing me all this pain.”
“Sweetheart, most of your pain has nothing to do with what Jason and Jodie did.” She eyed me with a raised eyebrow. I sat up abruptly.
“Surely you’re not suggesting this is my fault?”
“No, not at all. I’m just saying that if you harbor this unforgivness in your heart, it will eat you up inside. The Lords prayer asks that He should forgive us as we forgive those who sin against us. Forgive them the way God has forgiven you.” She got up, kissed my forehead and walked out of my room.
I sat on the park bench and let the sun warm my face. I heard the birds weave a beautiful melody in the trees. I leaned back and closed my eyes. Forgive my child, whispered a gentle voice in my heart. I opened my eyes and watched spring blossom before my eyes. As the sun claimed the sky, the vestiges of winter melted away. I made my decision then and there.
Jason opened the door with a stunned expression on his face. I could tell by his weary expression and the bags under his eyes that he hadn’t been getting much sleep. Before he could say anything I quickly wrapped my arms around him. When I eventually pulled away he seemed more stunned than before.
“I forgive you Jason.” He was at a loss for words. “I’m not saying it doesn’t hurt anymore because it still does. It’s just that today in the park, I realized I couldn’t go on holding this resentment in my heart. The second I forgave you, it was like I was filled with an inner warmth.” I watched the tears well up in his eyes and I couldn’t help but smile. “The same way the warm spring sun melts away the bitter winter, I felt my icy heart filled with a comforting warmth the second I forgave you.” He held me tightly and for the first time in weeks, I was at peace. As the trees and flowers blossomed around me because of spring, happiness and joy blossomed in my heart because of forgiveness.
