We’ve probably all seen that show or read that comic where the main character, usually around fourteen years old, suddenly acquires telekinesis. She is forced to conceal her powers, and in order to do so, must gain control over them. If she gets angry or upset, or too excited about something, everything becomes unpredictable. Perhaps glass breaks, things randomly fly around, metal beams bend in half, or steel melts. So she’s got to remain as calm as she can.

Believe it or not, that’s the way it is with most teens. No, they don’t have telekinesis, but they have emotions they must control, with pretty dramatic consequences if they don’t. Most likely, steel will not melt and things will not randomly start floating, but there are other results. For example, if they get too angry, they might fight with someone who’s been getting on their nerves, or break something (usually not metal). Or if they’re overly excited or upset, they may wind up doing something they may regret later. (Saying something embarrassing or hurting someone they care about, for example.)

Being a teenager is like being a person with telekinesis. You have to control yourself, and it seems like nobody understands you. In the shows or comics, the person with abnormal powers is often hunted down by villains or newspapers, or locked in a vicious rivalry with someone who can’t stand their being better at something.

With teenagers, the ones hunting them down are often guidance counselors. They truly believe they can understand, but they’ve been out of adolescence so long that they no longer remember just what it’s like. In addition to that, they may have a rivalry with some cutthroat competitor who just doesn’t know where to stop (sort of like the comics). Most often, though, the stress comes from schoolwork, intense testing preparation, family strife or relationship troubles, and perhaps a job or two. I know a lot of this from experience (no, I don’t break things).

A lot of times, we teenagers try to bear it on our own. I guess the stress of the world gets to us or something, so we might forget from time to time that there is a God who cares. But there are still a number of us who remember, and remember that we can cast our cares to the Lord. Even if He doesn’t seem to be, He is taking care of it. We remember that, and we abide by His word.

So, as a person grows older and new hormones become active, it becomes a lot harder to control your emotions. It’s a lot like having telekinesis, and having to work extra hard to control yourself. People seem to shut off to you, but God still listens, and you can trust in Him. Even if man does not, God always listens.
