Mary Jane rushed into the house calling excitedly to her mother.
“Mummy, Mummy, we had lots of fun today and look what I did.”
Mary Jane was six years old and she had just been to her first Vacation Bible School meeting. In her hand was a sheet of paper which she held up for her mother to see. On it was a drawing of a large cup, which looked to be so full that its contents were spilling over. Written underneath it in Mary Jane’s scrawly writing were the words ‘Jesus’ Love’.
“Come and sit down and tell me all about it.”
“Well, first of all we played some games and did a lot of singing. After that we had some cake and ice cream. It was so good. Then the teacher, Miss Green, gave us pencils and paper and showed us how to draw a cup. When we had all finished she told us a story.
“It was about a little girl who wanted to follow Jesus. She had been told that He loved her and wanted her to love Him. So one day she asked Jesus into her heart. Her name was Amy and she loved Him so much that she wanted to tell others about Him. She read the Bible a lot and when she grew up she became a teacher. Because she loved Jesus she went to India to tell boys and girls there about Jesus. I want to do that one day. Can I?”
“Maybe. But you have to learn a lot about Jesus just like Amy did. And you have to pray and ask God what He wants you to do.”
“Miss Green said we could be like that little girl if we asked Jesus to come into our heart. She said when Jesus comes into your heart He fills it with His love and its so much sometimes it runs over. She said our heart is like a cup which He fills with His love. That is why we drew a cup. Before Jesus comes in it is empty of His love. She said He still loves us but His love is not inside us.”
“Yes, Mary Jane, Jesus always loves us, but so often we don’t love Him.”
“But I am going to love Him. Miss Green asked if any of us would like to ask Jesus into our hearts so that His love would fill us. I wanted to say ‘yes’ cause I don’t want an empty heart.”
Mary Jane paused as if she was thinking about it again.
Mummy quietly waited for her to continue.
“Some of us put up our hands. Miss Green asked us to say a prayer together. Then she said if we really meant it Jesus’ love was now in our hearts. It would fill us. We would have a full cup.”
“And did you really mean it?”
“Yes Mummy.”
Mary Jane was quiet for a minute, then she continued:
“Then we learnt a new chorus. Can I sing it to you.”
“Of course, dear.”
Mary Jane began to sing:
“Running over, Running over,
My cup is full and running over.
Since the Lord saved me
I'm as happy as can be
My cup is full and running over.”
“That’s lovely dear. I know that chorus too, though I have not sung it for the longest while. Let me sing it with you.”
Happily they sang together, clapping their hands at the same time.
“Mummy Miss Green gave us a verse to learn. She said if we know it it will always remind us of God’s love because He sent Jesus to us. It is John chapter 3 verse 16.”
“I know dear. I can say it for you. For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. I will help you learn it before you go back to Bible School tomorrow.
“Now let’s go and get supper ready before Daddy comes home.”
