"What's your business downtown?" he asked sitting down.
"The hospital." I didn't want to elaborate more but he persisted.
"Anything serious?"
"My daughter has cancer."
He looked down at the floor. "I am sorry to hear that. Having cancer at any age is a shame. Men have thought about tragedy for ages and still haven't discovered why. They give reasons that maybe it's God's way to punish or inspire or that it's just an accident. But they truely don't know."
The diagnosis and the chemo had already left me weary. The prayers pleading with God had left me frustrated at the silence. "It's been very difficult. Very testing to everyone". I replied to him hoping the convesation would just end.
"It's hard" he continued. "You've got to realize that everyone is blind in the dark after coming out of the light. If you stay in the dark, your eyes will adjust to it and it will be like you were never in the light. This is how we get when we are away from God. Our eyes and our lives become darkened and we are lost when we get accustomed to it."
We sat in silence for a few seconds while the "el" went into a tunnel that runs under the river. Just as we were near the deepest part, the power went out shutting down everything except a small emergency light in the car. The passengers reacted by flipping open their cell phones and the car gave off a strange glow. But being so deep under ground, no signal was able to reach them for their emergency calls.
A conductor opened the door to the car. "There's been a major power outage in the neighborhood. We're going to need to walk up the tunnel to the next platform."
One by one we stepped out of the car and on to the tracks. I looked behind me and the old man was there urging me to go ahead. "Just follow the light" he told me.
When we got to the surface, I waited for him. I looked at everyone that was behind me but the old man wasn't there. The conductor cane up the incline out of the tunnel.
"Is there an older man coming?"
"No. I'm the last one" he said.
"Are you sure?"
"Yes."
It was then that I realized that the old man was there to remind me to follow the light.
