10 A wife of noble character who can find?
She is worth far more than rubies.
Well, my hubby found a character all right. And rubies are pretty, but they aren’t very cuddly and they can’t turn your socks right-side-out. Maybe I’m a pretty good wife.
11 Her husband has full confidence in her
and lacks nothing of value.
He has more confidence in me than he should have. A good credit score would have had value. I’m probably not a very good wife.
12 She brings him good, not harm,
all the days of her life.
I bring him goodies, does that count? Wait…but those goodies have made him plumpy. Ugh, I am a bad wife.
13 She selects wool and flax
and works with eager hands.
My hubby prefers cotton tee-shirts. I buy them on sale.
14 She is like the merchant ships,
bringing her food from afar.
Ok, I’ve got this one. You should see my ship (aka Expedition) loaded up from Costco! And it’s pretty far to Costco, too. Yes, good wife!
15 She gets up while it is still dark;
she provides food for her family
and portions for her servant girls.
Wait…WHAT? Up before dark? I don’t think so. Servant girls would make breakfast so I could sleep in.
16 She considers a field and buys it;
out of her earnings she plants a vineyard.
Cool, she’s a realtor and a grower. I have a grape vine in my backyard. That is if the gardeners haven’t pulled it out like they did the avocado tree.
17 She sets about her work vigorously;
her arms are strong for her tasks.
Where’s she getting all that energy if she gets up before dawn? My arms are okay but I have some trouble with my back. Does that make me a bad wife?
18 She sees that her trading is profitable,
and her lamp does not go out at night.
When does this woman sleep? My work is profitable and the glow of my laptop screen does illuminate the room late into the night. Hubby does not appreciate it though.
19 In her hand she holds the distaff
and grasps the spindle with her fingers.
I would rather spin tales than thread but my embroidery work is excellent and I have been known to sew a button back on here and there.
20 She opens her arms to the poor
and extends her hands to the needy.
Define poor and needy.
21 When it snows, she has no fear for her household;
for all of them are clothed in scarlet.
Not a problem here in Southern California.
22 She makes coverings for her bed;
she is clothed in fine linen and purple.
I’ll tell hubby I have to take a quilting class in order to be a better wife. I wonder if he’ll buy that one. I don’t suppose fine linen and purple were the blue jeans and purple tee-shirt of the day.
23 Her husband is respected at the city gate,
where he takes his seat among the elders of the land.
My hubby does not have time to serve on the city council. And besides, I’m not sure how respected those folks are these days.
24 She makes linen garments and sells them,
and supplies the merchants with sashes.
I embroider corporate logos onto polo shirts for companies. Same thing!
25 She is clothed with strength and dignity;
she can laugh at the days to come.
I can “put on” those things—in public. I laugh a lot.
26 She speaks with wisdom,
and faithful instruction is on her tongue.
I am ALWAYS offering my wise opinions. And I love to tell people what to do.
27 She watches over the affairs of her household
and does not eat the bread of idleness.
Idleness…rest…are those different? I like bread.
28 Her children arise and call her blessed;
her husband also, and he praises her:
29 "Many women do noble things,
but you surpass them all."
Really?
Good wife? Bad wife? Who’s to say? I’ve been married 26 years to this guy and he and God are both still talking to me.
