I graduated High School in 1981 my expectations for life were high and I felt prepared for the world in front of me; that same year I met my wife to be, Marcia, and by 1982 we were married. We both knew we had a love that was special it was as if God himself created us with each other in mind.
We were married at my Aunt’s house, by her pool. Our honeymoon was a night at a Ramada Inn followed by a quick trip to Disney World. We often enjoyed dinners with our parents which helped our budget stretch from one paycheck to the next. It was our humble beginning and the future was wide open.
We watched many of our friends get married, buy homes, and grow families never knowing the obstacle we would face trying to grow our own family. Marcia and I began to wonder when God would bless us with children and after five-years of trying we began seeking professional help. One treatment led to another, but nothing led to children and each month would end in disappointment. We felt the wind failing in our sails, as our desire to grow our family seemed to be out of our hands.
In 1994 both Marcia and I felt the Lord was saying to us He was going to give us a child, and our hopes began to increase. We set our course on trying and again were confronted with disappointment month after month as 1994 drew to a close our faith and hope began fading like the sun setting on a grey day.
But, that is not the end of our story in 1999 I was on my way to work and Marcia called me. She was listening to a local Christian radio program and during the prayer time there was a request to pray for a little boy who needed a home. Marcia said she felt the Lord was telling her to check into his situation and she was going to contact the station. Dare we hope again?
Marcia called the radio station and the person who took the initial prayer request “happened” to answer the phone call, something she normally did not do. She spoke with Marcia and explained the situation in detail. She also put Marcia in touch with the caseworker of the young boy. By the end of the week we were scheduled to meet him at a local park. It seemed as if our sails were finding new wind, in a place we did not expect.
We arrived at the park and the caseworker introduced us to Bryce as friends of hers. We played with him for several hours, each of us having a great time then we closed the day by taking them to a local McDonalds for lunch. We gave Bryce a beach ball and he took it with him as they got in the car and headed back to where he was living. Marcia and I headed home and we were both in awe of the time we spent with this four-year old boy.
A few weeks after playing in the park we received a call from the caseworker. The place where Bryce was staying was not able to keep him much longer and the State was considering placing him in a lock-down facility. The caseworker knew we would be a much better solution for a long-term home and asked us to consider taking Bryce in for a time. Marcia and I looked at each other and in seconds knew our answer. We both felt the ship we were on gaining speed as the sails filled with the wind of God.
We began our journey with no idea of the experiences we would face. We heard God as a distant voice unsure of the waters He would lead us through. Bryce came to live with us in the spring of 1999, and by Thanksgiving of 2000 we completed our adoption making him our son forever. Bryce was born in the spring of 1994, the year the Lord told us we would have a child.
