She was like a tree tall and strong
Her clothes smelled of wood smoke
And she carried fruit in her pockets
Poverty and trials were in her life
She wore them like nests in her hair
Her arms were strong like gnarled branches
Her skin rough and dark like bark
But I saw their tenderness
As she steadied her sick child
Gently stroking his brow
Your church is in the open
Under the trees
You worship in groups
Dressed in blue and white
Your strong voice rises like sap
From your rich African soul
Ngingenw’ Emoyeni
Wind of the spirit of God
Your faith runs deep
Like roots in the rich African soil
Where do you rest your head at night?
Is it under a tin roof?
The seasons leave their mark on you
Like growth rings on a tree trunk
You smell of herbal ointment
Your face shines with Vaseline
Your feet are cracked but strong
Your hips are for climbing
Your back a sturdy bough
For infants swaddled there
I Saw an African woman today
Her story was written in her face
Without her saying a word I knew it
It is in the melody of the marimba
It is in the beat of the skin drums
The vast savannah whispers it
Africa herself is its author
