WALKING SCRIPTURE

I had experienced a spiritual awakening through a Cursillo retreat in Okinawa, Japan. The following year I found myself half way around the world living in Ethiopia, that ancient land that birthed Lucy, one of our oldest known mothers. This awakening drew me to the Bible, where scripture literally walked out of its pages by the images I encountered in everyday life.

Walking by and in the Red Sea, I started thinking of Moses up there in Egypt. Found in the reeds in a basket, then later he, his brother Aaron and sister Miriam, led the Israelites away from a tyrannical ruler. Was he out of the and into the cooking pot and into the fire as he led his people through the desert for forty years? Having commandments and a covenant from Yahweh helped shape up the wanderers into a community.

Seeing camels reminded me that caravans were one of the major ways of traveling in ancient days. I wondered how long a journey to Israel would take and what would they encounter on the way? The Queen of Sheba was said to be from Ethiopia. Her travel took much effort but she was rewarded when she encountered the Wisdom of Solomon.

The old village well with the women visiting and catching up on the latest news was another image. There was the well that Joseph’s brothers stashed him in and Jacobs well. Perhaps Jesus had met the woman with five husbands and forgiven her much at a well similar to this. I could see how there was “living water.”

On another occasion I was stopped because a flock of sheep were in possession of the dusty road, and a lone man was walking with a lamb around his neck. Yes, I think I saw the Good Shepherd, who knows His sheep and his sheep know Him. I know He went after the lost sheep too and there was much rejoicing. I know because I was one that He found.

Your parallels with scripture are interesting, especially in the fact that you could write this in the "Africa" topic.
There were a few lines that didn't quite make sense, particularly Moses Firepan and fire sentence. I suspect it would be more comprehensible if you filled it in a little.
You still have plenty of words to spare, and you really could have fleshed out the parallels you have hinted at in this piece.

This was interesting. As others have mentioned, I enjoyed the parallels.

I think, though, that I would have chosen just one aspect and expounded on it further. Make it your own story, instead of just re-telling us what we know.
