Is it the story of his birth in a manger of something deeper?
Growing up in a happy family, Christmas was always special.
My parents were not wealthy, yet they gave what they could to us.
There was always laughter and joy, with grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles all involved. The smell of baking greeted guests as they arrived during that time. Attending church on Christmas Day was always a highlight, yet as I grew older, I turned to things of the world.
Christmas lost its true meaning, instead it became a season of partying and drinking and “having a good time.” Sure, we attended church, brought the gifts and gave, yet the true meaning somehow got lost along the way. I knew what I was doing was crazy, yet I was powerless to stop it.
Instead of loving Christmas like I had as a child, my children as they grew older began to dread it. Would mom stay sober or would she blow it? Questions no child should have to ask. Sure, there were good Christmas’s but there were bad ones!
The year 1993 was a tough one. The church disciplined me and withdrew my membership. My marriage was about to break up and I stood to lose everything. My family and friends began in earnest to intercede and pray. There was a prayer chain amongst the members of the church who prayed hourly.
In what can only be described as a miracle, God revealed Himself to me as Dave and I traveled through to Port Elizabeth, to join the family for Christmas. I literally heard His voice offer me life or death. I chose life and He turned my life around.
He took me from the vision of a babe in a manger to the cross on Calvary. At last, I understood the true meaning of the season.
Praise Him that all relationships were wholly restored and my children never had to fear another Christmas.
