Ruth sat in her grandparent's living room gazing at the nativity scene.
I wonder, she thought. What is all this about. Every year they put up this scene and I do not understand what any of it means. But if I ask them they will be angry with me once again.
Ruth sat thinking. Should I ask or not?
She decided that they got angry with her a lot so what did it matter just one more time?
"Grandma?"
"Yes Ruth? What is it?"
"I was wondering why Every year around this time we put up the Christmas tree and the scene with the shepherds and those men and the little baby and the mom and dad?"
"Well Ruth. This time we remember the birth of Jesus. The baby is Jesus."
"But Gram?"
"yes?"
"Why do we remember Jesus? Why is it so important to remember him? I mean he isn't even around anymore. So why?"
"Enough questions Ruth."
"But I want to know."
"I said enough."
Ruth didn't find out until many years later that the reason Jesus was remembered at this time of year was because He came to die for the sins of mankind. Ruth's family was one of many families in this age that just did things because they were tradition. There was nothing significant about the day to her family.
It was a radio program years later that told why Jesus came and finally answered Ruth's question to her grandmother so many years before.
He was born because His destiny was the cross so that she could be forgiven of her sins and be reconciled to Him and His Father.
Author's note:
This story is based on an event in my life. I am also not a great writer as you can see. But I have had many tell me I have a gift. So I figure hey the writer's challenge is there on faith writers so I may as well take advantage of it and at least try.
As a song said that I heard a while ago. I will sail my vessel till the river runs dry. like a bird upon the wind these waters are my sky. I'll never reach my destination if I never try so I will sail my vessel till the river runs dry. With the good Lord as my captain. Chorus to the song called The River by Garth Brooks. Not much of a Garth Brooks fan anymore. But that song has always helped me and encouraged me to keep going.
