Topic: The Reason for the Season of Christmas (12/04/08)
“Help! I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!” called the elderly woman in the television commercial. Sprawled on the living room floor, unable to get to the telephone, she found herself in a frightening predicament. Scary enough, the advertisers hoped that viewers would want to buy their product – a radio-like device, worn like a pendant, with which assistance could be immediately summoned. That commercial aired years ago; yet the image of the helpless woman and her plaintive cry has stayed with me.

This woman, in a sense, represents the spiritual state of each of us. We, too, are fallen. Cast down by our own sin nature, we have no way of righting ourselves. Yet, long before any of us recognized our plight, God had already made the provision for our rescue. From the beginning of time, He set in motion the plan that would result in the rescue of all who call on Him in faith: God would provide the payment for our fallenness. Jesus would die in my place – and yours – and in doing so, would lift us from our fallen state. At the precisely chosen moment in history, God Himself took on human flesh and entered our atmosphere with one intent: dying on the cross, raising His own from their fallen state.

Christmas is the celebration of that moment. It is the culmination of the Old Testament prophecies, and the fulfillment of God’s promise to raise us up, when we were unable to do anything to save ourselves.

Truly, Christmas is God’s answer to our desperate cry to Him, “Help! I’ve fallen and I can’t get up.”
