Topic: The Reason for the Season of Christmas (12/04/08)
“Does it feel like Christmas this year to you?” Nicki asked her best friend Kiara.

“Yes!” Kiara exclaimed. “Christmas is my favorite time of the year! This year especially it feels like Christmas no matter where I am or what I’m doing.”

Nicki sat thinking for a moment, “We are sitting here drinking hot chocolate watching Christmas movies. There are Christmas decorations everywhere in my house, wherever I look I see Christmas…” her voice trailed off. “But I don’t feel Christmas. My family is so excited for Christmas, Jenny talks about it non stop. I am trying so hard to be filled with the Christmas spirit, but it’s not happening this year.”

“Everybody has a hole inside that needs to be filled.” Kiara explaned. “Especially at Christmas time people look for something to fill that hole. Some little kids, like Jenny, try to fill it with Santa. Other people with presents, lights, Christmas trees or decorations, Christmas movies or books. But there is only one thing that truly fills that hole, the rest only do a poor job of patching it.” Kiara went into the other room for a moment and brought out one of my Christmas decorations, a cloth nativity. She took the cloth baby out of the manger and handed it to Nicki. “This is what you need to believe in.” Right then Kiara’s mom pulled up into the driveway. “I need to go now” Kiara said hugging me goodbye. She walked to the door and then turned around, “Believe Nicki, Believe!”

Nicki was lying in bed that night, unable to fall asleep. She had heard the nativity story many times, but it had always been just a nice Christmas story, not something to believe in. She had wanted to believe once a few years ago, but really, a baby boy born in a manger, growing up to be King of Kings? Dying and saving the whole world from their sins? Nicki closed her eyes and tried to fall asleep, but she kept thinking about what Kiara said, “Will the baby Jesus born on Christmas day really fill this gap in my life?” she whispered.

Nicki heard her puppy Noel crying to go outside. Nicki got out of bed and put on her robe and slippers. She then quietly took Noel outside trying not to wake the rest of her family. It was freezing cold outside and she pulled her robe more tightly around her. “Hurry, Noel.” She pleaded silently.

She then turned her face up toward the sky and saw millions of twinkling stars. “Jesus,” she whispered softly, “I don’t know if you’re out there, I don’t know if you’re real. But Kiara says you’re out there, Kiara believes in you.” She paused a moment before continuing, “So Jesus, if you are real, then could you give me some proof?” Then the most amazing thing happened. If angels still come down to earth bringing messages to people like they did to the shepherds on Christmas night, then she would have seen an angel. And if God sends messages through stars, then it would have been through the star she was staring at. But because she wasn’t sure if either of these things could happen, she just accepted that she didn’t know how she knew, she just knew without a doubt that Jesus was born on Christmas morning, and would one day save the world.

Early the next morning as soon as Nicki was sure Kiara would be awake she dialed Kiara’s number. “Please answer!” Nicki whispered.

“Hello?” Kiara said answering the phone.

“Merry Christmas Kiara!” Nicki said joyfully.

“Well Merry Christmas to you Nicki!” Kiara replied unsure of the sudden change in Nicki’s mood. “Did something happen between yesterday afternoon and today that I am unaware of?”

“Oh Kiara, the most remarkable thing happened last night!” Nicki said feeling something she had never quite experienced before. “Kiara, thank you. You helped me find the best Christmas present ever. I believe Kiara, I believe!”

What a wonderful story of salvation at Christmas. Enjoyed the details.
