The snow is gently falling, dancing through the air. It is Christmas Eve, with all of its excitement and anticipation. The last forty years my husband and I had enjoyed living on Main Street of our small town. Our town and street take on the look and feeling of Curies and Ives during the holidays, small old shops with window displays, lights, and greenery. Older homes line the street on both sides of the shops. Our home is located just at one end of the row of shops, giving us a perfect view of all the Christmas hustle and bustle. This time of the year is very special to us. Sixty years ago, we were married on Christmas Eve. On this Christmas Eve my heart is devoid of all joy, slowly breaking into a million pieces. I walk into our bedroom, and sit at the side of the bed, taking hold of my dear husband’s hand. He is dying, the doctor says he will probably not make through the night. “Honey, don’t cry” my husband whispers “This has always been our special day, a beautiful time we have celebrated for many years”. “Doesn’t it seem fitting that our Lord would pick this day to take me home” “He came to this earth, was born and died for us, that he might give us eternal life, a life without sorrow or pain, today I will enter into that life” “Please be happy for me, celebrate His coming always, and be thankful for all the wonderful memories we have shared”.
Ever since my husband went home to be with the Lord, on that Christmas Eve, I have learned to be thankful for all the wonderful years and beautiful memories God gave us. Christmas means a lot more to me now. Without the birth of our Savior and Lord Jesus, my husband and all of us would be without hope. Christmas should always be a time of hope, joy, and anticipation of our, one day going home to be with Him. And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins.” Matthew 1:21
