They have called me 'ramblin rose" for years, because in my younger
days that is what I did.
I was searching for that "elusive dream" Thank God I found it but not on the road.
One paticular trip from Washington to Arkansas, I decided to use a "decoy" .
I was driving a nice customized van, and felt that I needed protection since I was
traveling alone.
I got a man's pair of boxer shorts size 44, along with a tie, large shoes and a hat.
At each stop this stuff would hang up front on the steering wheel, etc.
This worked fine, except for one trip.
I pulled up to a little off the wall store went in and asked, Is it ok if I pulled out back
for the night to get some rest? The clerk said it would be fine.
So I parked the van, put the "big" boxer shorts over the steering wheel, hung the tie
over the mirror, put the shoes on the dash, and put that big ol hat near a window .
Crawled in the back to settle down for a good nights sleep.
But that did not last long.
A bright light shown into the back window and I just knew that was a cop. Yikes! now what?
Well, if I just pretend to not notice maybe he would just go away.
He did leave but my curiousity would not let me go back to sleep.
Struggling to get dressed, and out of the van, into the store I went.
There stood a cop as big as the underwear, "just his size"
I said what is going on? He said, where is the big fellow that is driving that van?
I laughed, and said there was no "big fellow". That, that is my "decoy" so that if anyone got
the idea to break into the van, they would think a "big" fellow was driving. He said there was
a robbery in town and he thought since this was a out of state plate van, just maybe this was
the guy that had robbed the store a few blocks away.
He did get a chuckle out of the "decoy" and my night of sleep was added with allot of laughter.
The car trip to Arkansas went safely the rest of the way.
