She was sitting under the bridge watching the twinkling stars in the night sky and glare of the city lights. Her thoughts took her back to much simpler days, a warm room with a fireplace, a family coming together for the Christmas holiday. They would exchange gifts around an enormous pine tree decorated by her happy family. She never had to worry what dinner would be; it was always wonderful. She wasn’t sure if it would be turkey or roast beef. She was welcomed with hugs and kisses from brothers and sisters. The desserts, oh those desserts were magnificent. Her favorite was a holiday treat which was baked every year, german Christmas stollen. Her mother spent many hours preparing for this day and as the family would gather to eat their Christmas feast, a prayer of thanksgiving was always offered first to show gratitude for all their abundance.
She was feeling the cold air. She was glad there was no snow yet. It was time to cover up and make herself more comfortable for the night. All her belongings now were by her side; a diary, pictures, some clothes. Almost all of her belongings were in one simple bag. Tomorrow is Christmas. Her thoughts quickly changed to where she would go and who would welcome her with a hug and kiss. She didn’t know, but remembered there were some restaurants nearby and she could always wait until the scraps were thrown into the dumpster. Diners rarely finished their meals and then there was always food not served. Maybe she would have a choice. Even now, she still didn’t know what she would be eating; it will be a surprise just like it used to be.
Her family was gone. Her parents had passed. Brothers and sisters were busy with their lives. Everyone had their own family now. Everything had changed over the years. Oh, how she wished she could go home for Christmas just once more. She offers her nightly prayer and tries to sleep. She’s at peace knowing no one can take away her memories.
