I guess I wasn’t much of a country girl.
In recent years, my parents have continued their love for camping. However, their form has changed a bit. Now they take a camper and plug into electricity, enjoying the comfort of air conditioning, refrigerator, a stove, and television. Fishing is still the sport of entertainment, but even that has progressed with more advanced rod and reels and types of bait. The last time I joined my parents at the lake for the day, I had to admit to myself that I longed for the simplicity of the old days when camping was really camping.
I can’t help but compare this to the gospel. There was a time when the word of God was preached in a simple format and people sat upon wooden pews in old country churches to hear it. Songs were simply praising God in tunes that were easy to remember and would stick in the mind all week. Families gathered around dinner tables to eat together and not one morsel of food was lifted without first being blessed. Neighbors looked out after neighbors, and the church was there reaching out to those in need. Worship was simple. Life was simple.
I noticed one thing about camping. Whether the campers sleep in a camper or a tent, fish from a boat or from the bank, no matter what gadgets and accessories are brought from home, nature stays the same. The fish still swim in the water and the mosquitoes still swarm nearby. I guess that’s about the way it is with God. No matter what style of worship music you might choose to use or how comfortable the seats are, Jesus is the same, yesterday, today, and forever. Truth is basic and simple, no matter how complicated some try to make it.
