My husband reached over and patted my arm. “The baby will come soon enough. Everything in its own time.”
“Easy for you to say.” I retorted. “You aren’t the one whose ankles are swollen and who can’t sleep through the night because the little one is sitting on your bladder.”
“I know, I know. Mary, you have handled this whole pregnancy so well. I can’t imagine what it must be like for you.” Joseph was rubbing my neck and talking softly. He always knew the right things to say.
“It hasn’t been easy, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. This child is truly a gift and I am anxiously awaiting his arrival.”
Joseph was right; he couldn’t imagine what I was going through. Then again, he was going through a trial of his own.
When the angel of God first revealed to me that I was pregnant I was full of panic. Joseph and I were set to marry, but the rumors were almost too much. He showed his strength and character when he went through with our marriage. How thankful I am for that! The days of my pregnancy would be so much harder without him by my side.
Joseph had arisen and brought a small stool for me to put my feet on to relieve the swelling. “It really is getting close now.” I sighed peacefully.
“This child that I carry brings with it so much promise and here I am, simple Mary, being the bearer of such good news.”
Joseph smiled, “I know, as I was working today I began counting how many days left in your confinement. Only fourteen or so days at this point. I think about me being the earthly father of such an important babe. Will I be able to raise him in the right manner? Will I be able to teach him what he needs to know? So many questions, almost as many questions as days that you have carried him.”
“Joseph, you will be a great father. I always knew that you would. You get to experience that just a little sooner than if our marriage and pregnancy had happened in the normal way.”
I shifted on the mat and laid my head against Joseph’s chest. “Imagine, in just a few short days we will be parents and we will be parenting the son of God himself. What a weight and honor to carry.”
I really was excited about being a mother. I have always wanted to have many children. Now I was counting the days until the arrival of my first son, a child that will change the world. Sometimes the waiting was horrendous. I just wanted the days to pass quickly so that he would be here. Other times I just couldn’t believe how quickly the days had already passed. I was close to my date now and I had not finished savoring being pregnant. The days were full of preparations such as sewing clothes for the wee one and blankets to keep him warm.
“Oh Joseph, how am I going to finish these last days with the swelling ankles and a body so big I can barely maneuver it?”
“You are going to finish them the same way you got this far, one day at a time.”
“Ah, words of wisdom once again from you my husband. You are right, each day brings me closer to the birth of my child and each day I will savor until he arrives.”
