No! No! No! This could not be happening to me and certainly not my perfect little baby. It was then that I think I experienced my first ‘out of body experience’ for sure. I got up and laid him in his crib and grabbed the new baby health book that was given to me during my pregnancy. It was well read because I was a new mother and wanted to do everything the correct way…..only now do I realize that it is just a guide, at best. I had read the part on seizures, so I quickly flipped to the index in the back and found the page about seizures - page 327… I’ll never forget it. It has been permanently seared into my memory.
My next instinct was to run and find the phone and call 911. I was amazed at the steadiness of my hands. It was almost as if I was a seasoned pro at placing calls to 911, but I most certainly was not. After what seemed like way too many rings, the operator picked up and told me what to do to make sure he was safe and not harming himself.
“Be patient”, I tell myself………then the operator echoed what I had just told myself. For a second, I thought she was reading my mind. Or maybe I had spoken aloud and didn’t even realize it.
“Please be patient, the paramedics are on their way. They’ll be there before you know it.”
All I could think was, “Really? Then why does it feel like a hundred years has gone by already and no one is here?!?” “And now I’m supposed to…” What did she tell me? “Just be patient!” “Yeah, okay!” I think to myself. “I’ll get right on that!” At that moment, knowing full well I was speaking audibly, I pleaded, “Please just hurry up!”
The paramedics ultimately did arrive. And they took care of my precious baby boy. And ever since then, all I have ever done is “Be patient.” I now empathize with all of the parents of special needs children who are told this very thing day in and day out. How they must feel! I truly feel for them.
And finally here’s some consolation. For those of you who are in similar circumstances, you will do a lot of waiting, and you will have to try to exercise a little patience, and you won’t have a choice in the matter. Just be persistent and don’t ever deny your God-given instincts. And remember, good things come to those who wait….really they do!
Psalm 37:7
“Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him:…” KJV
