Previous Challenge Entry (Level 1 – Beginner)
Topic: Charade (08/14/08)
The morning sun reflected brightly on the wooden floor of Julie’s bedroom. This radiance always reminded her it was time to get up and begin another day of performing. The act today was the same as she had performed every day for the past twenty seven years of her life; and while she never spoke of it, she prided herself that they only got better with time.

Julie groggily arose from her bed and blindly shuffled her feet to the bathroom. Glancing at herself in the mirror, she painfully winced and quickly looked away. Although Julie had beautiful curly blonde hair, crystal blue eyes, and a body that many men found attractive, and most women despised; she still found herself despicable and resented the image reflected back at her. Her eyes interpreted what they saw as something very unlovely, and most importantly, unlovable.

Her heart was hurting from many issues unresolved in her early life, and it would remain that way. Some things are better not addressed she continually convinced herself. No good would come of tears and heartache, as a result of her past life that could never be relived. So like everyday since, today would be no different.

Julie reached on the top shelf of her linen closet and pulled out a beautiful solid oak box. This box contained an item that she had kept ever since she could remember feeling emotions. As she removed the lid of the box she peered inside and wept openly. How Julie resented that she had no other options. How she longed to be able to eternally destroy the box and its contents. As her frustrations subsided, she quickly wiped her face, and focused on the important task ahead. With a stoic expression, she removed the item with shaky and weary hands and placed the immaculate masque on her face. Now equipped to face the world, Julie stepped out of her house, concealing all of who she was; allowing the continual game of charades to keep her in a state of bondage, with no hope of finding freedom.

What a sad story! You did a good job of arousing the reader's curiosity for what was in the box.

Putting on a "mask" each day is a perfect example of how the world may see us. Very good writing, especially the last paragraph, drawing your reader in.
