"Things won't change if you don't talk!" I heard screaming in my ear. Oh if I could just turn off the voices in my head. There are so many and they are confusing me.
"No one will believe you and you will look the fool!" comes the other voice. The all too familiar voice has kept me in this predicament too long.
"Sammie! Get in here." Now that was not a voice in my head. Then reality set in. It was she. I knew I could only hide for so long.
"Coming," I said in a weak and nervous tone. I began walking rather slow her way. My hesitation could be perceived as a defiant teen but that was far from my intentions.
"Sammie! Where have you been? You get in here and clean this mess up," she said with a cold tone.
It wasn't even my mess. Why me? There are four other people in this house and I am the only one who is made to work.
"Sammie, I think your father is sleeping with another woman." She said almost smiling. As if to try to ruin my special day.
"What?" I yelled. This is not how I envisioned my Sweet 16th birthday to be. Somehow I hoped that a fairy would stroll down from the sky and wave her wand to make all this right, just for my one special day. Somehow I think that would be more believeable than my story.
"Yes. I was trailing him again today and saw him talking to someone in the store. He has people following me, you know. I have to keep on top of things or he will kill us all," she accused.
"What?" That was all I could say. There was no arguing with her in this state of mind. Plus, if I wanted to stay off her "kill us all" list I had to keep the down low.
"It's my birthday, mom." I don't call her that often. With all do respect, it's hard to call someone mom who could...well let's not get ahead of ourselves.
"I am sorry but it's your father's fault. He has ruined everything for all of us." She said with an evil sneer.
I just walked off then turned and said, "I have youth group. I gotta run." She hates when I go there. I think she fears the truth getting out.
She turned with a huge grin and yelled, "Have a great time hunnie. See you soon!"
I still don't get it. I know the medical term but it just amazes me how a person can change so fast. I just smiled and went on my way.
It was time. I had to speak out before I chickened out again. Time is safety anymore. I walked up to my youth leader and said I needed to talk. He agreed. So after our meeting we went to a separate room and I spilled my guts.
I was right. He couldn't believe it. He has never seen my mother in any way but nice and very spiritual. I tried to explain her disease but he was skeptical. I said, " You have to believe me. She told all us kids she will kill us if we tried to do anything. I need your help."
Immediately he stood up and with authority said, "Stop this charade! It is not a game to speak the things you do. People could get hurt by what you are accusing."
I was dumbfounded. Why did he not even try to look into this case? Something was amiss.
My youth leader sat down calmly and looked me in the eye and said, "Your mother called me today. She warned me you would be coming to me with all this. She said you were just acting out because of issues between her and your father. I know you love your father but don't get in the middle of all this. Now go home and stop this nonsense."
She did it. She convinced everyone that I was the crazy one. Her multiple personality disorder has been masked again.
I thought, "You are right. I love my father very much, my heavenly Father." He is my only hope.
