Tears flowed freely as she whispered, “Father forgive me”.
She flashed back.
Years ago, she ran away from an abusive step-father and a negligent mother.
Her brother was in prison for robbery and possession of hard drugs
This certainly was no home.
One morning before anyone was up, she put a few belongings in a bag along with some money she had stolen, slipped out the back door and fled, to nowhere in particular.
Tears flowed freely as she ran past Mrs. Sarah, the pastor’s wife who had witnessed to her and also invited her to church. However, she felt that if there was no love at home, she wouldn’t find it elsewhere. She ignored them.
A week after running away, she got a job in a small laundry company, and began rebuilding her life. She rented a small apartment and soon made friends.
A part of her told her that something was missing. Having realized that what was missing was love. She sought to fill the void, and in so doing, she met Pete.
Pete seemed to fill up the gaps in her life, and for a while, she seemed happy. He was the world to her and slowly she began to forget her troubled past.
However, her joy was short lived as she found out that sex could not stand in the shoes of love. Worse still, she couldn’t stop having sex and soon began to hop from bed to bed.
While at work, a young man came in to collect a suit and before leaving he engaged her in a conversation, telling her about the love of Christ and eventually invited her to Church.
She promised to consider his invitation which she never did. This Jesus sounded too fictional. “If this Jesus was for real, He can’t love people like me”. She told herself.
Still trying to fill up the void in her life she sought to find happiness in the needle, filling her bloodstream with drugs. As always, happiness lasted only for a while, and she ended up weak, frustrated and oppressed. A co- worker had noticed her drug use and reported to the police.
Once again she had to hit the road.
As the pastor closed the service, he pored hard into the congregation wondering where she was. The Holy Sprit never lied, maybe, something was slowing her down.
Taking the train not minding where it was headed, all she needed to do was run somewhere. At the next stop, she took a bus, and for a moment she felt like she was running and hiding from something, or was it someone?
By the time she got down from the bus, it was already dark, she had no money, was hungry and tired.
Not knowing where to go, she saw a small building with a stream of people pouring out the front door. Something within pulled her towards the building. By the time she got to the front door, most people had left. She hesitated before going inside, but something caught her attention. It was the podium. She was held spell bound as if it held something she had been searching for.
Drawing closer to the altar, she became more detached from her surroundings. She dropped her bag, it felt heavy.
He had given up searching for her and was heading for his office, when from the corner of his eye, he noticed someone moving towards the altar.
There she was.
She stared hard at the cross. Transfixed, it felt nostalgic.
“His name is Jesus”, said the pastor.
“He loves you and if you give your life to him he would set you free from all your fears, pain and frustration”.
She broke down in tears and got on her knees.
That was how she got here. The pastor stood beside her with his hands on her shoulders assuring her of the joys of salvation and the freedom from pain, frustration and oppression.
The fact that in trying to hide from the Father, we run right into his arms.
“Where can I go from your Spirit or where can I flee from your presence?”
