Aunt Sarai smiled excitedly as she prepared for the arrival of her friends. The second Thursday of each month acts as a passage for six women to learn, laugh, and love. They take turns each month hosting the monthly gathering. For a few of them, this would be the only time they could be in the company of like-minded individuals. The others cherished this time because their husbands had passed away and their children lived more than an hour’s drive into the next county. For Aunt Sarai, this was an opportunity to express the love she has for her beloved friends by making the most of her hospitality skills. She meticulously placed the cucumber sandwiches on the bottom of the three-tiered serving tray. Recollections of her mother’s marble countertop flooded her mind. This same serving tray adorned that countertop. Aunt Sarai was elated when her mother presented the serving tray to her when she hosted her first gathering because it is a family heirloom that channeled their talents. Sweet scarlet strawberries occupied the middle tier while petite lemon tarts dominated the top.

As the Cherry Blossom-embroidered tablecloth drifted over the tabletop, Aunt Sarai sighed thankfully. Miyoko, a Japanese friend, had given it to Aunt Sarai as a gift of gratitude. This same tablecloth once dressed the table in Miyoko’s home where Aunt Sarai used the Bible to teach Miyoko the English language three times a week. As a result, Miyoko believed and was baptized, (Mark 16:16 NASB). Aunt Sarai marveled at the memory of how the tablecloth connected Miyoko to Christ.

The crunching sound of the rocks in the driveway let Aunt Sarai know that her guests were arriving. She greeted five ladies with warm hugs and praises to God for allowing them to be together again. The friends ate, gave updates on their lives and studied the Israelite’s crossing of the Jordan, (Joshua 3 NASB). Finally, the ladies ended their day with a friendly game of cards.
