Today is the day; the day that I have been anxiously awaiting. I can smell the aroma of frying bacon. In my mind I see the light fluffy eggs on the heavy white breakfast plates. My mouth begins to water at the thought of slowly sipping the fresh squeezed orange juice.
Today is the day; the day that I will be able to ride my new purple bicycle into town for the first time. I feel so grown up. Then it hits me; to get into town I have to cross the bridge. The rickety old foot bridge with missing pieces of plank. I feel paralyzed. My heart is pounding in my chest and my head is throbbing. I cannot do it. I am petrified at the thought of crossing that bridge. I cannot breath, I am trembling all over. NO! NO! I cannot do it!
The throbbing in my head is not stopping. Twisting in my tangled mass of sheets I realize that the throbbing in my head is the sound of my alarm clock. Slowly I begin to focus clearly on the present.
No longer am I that happy go lucky little girl, eagerly awaiting her first solo ride into town. I am an adult with responsibilities, deadlines, and major decisions to make.
Make no mistake that dream was not some made up subconscious fantasy. I lived that day of new found independence and had to make the decision to either allow fear to imprison me in its grasp or cross the rickety old bridge and enter into a world of new found independence.
Today the dream has returned, as it so often does during these defining moments of my life. Today the bridge symbolizes the tough decisions I face daily. Decisions like making the Bible my standard or conforming to what the world says is right, raising my children according to the scriptures or allowing the piped in influences of music and TV to define their heroes and mold their characters, submitting to my husband out of reverence to Christ or giving in to the liberated “do it herself” phenomenon.
The question I must now ask myself is, will I allow the rationalizing and reasoning that come with maturity prevent me from moving forward or will I like a child cast all my anxieties onto the LORD and move forward on faith as I did on that carefree summer morning when I made the decision to cross the rickety, unstable bridge.
