My heart sunk. I could almost hear the collective gasp of angels around us. Had we really said that? Had our conversation really turned from 'how unsafe is the situation' to condemning this young man, who has been created by God with plans and purposes for a meaningful life, to a worthless human being?
In Psalms 51:6 it says God "desires truth in the innermost being" (NASB). My mom and I are both Christians. We both know the truth. God loves us so much that He came down to earth, lived and died for us, and rose again so that we might have eternal life with Him in Heaven. And sometimes, during worship, it seems I know that truth so firmly and so deeply that I could spiral right into heaven. Yet, there we were determining that this one young man was simply worthless.
This free gift of salvation was not meant for us to hold onto tightly and never share it with anyone else. God desires that everyone should come to know Jesus and have eternal life. (See 2 Peter 3:9.) God did not save me for my sake alone, He saved me that I should have my heart cleansed (Psalm 51:10), so that "I will teach transgressors [His] ways, and sinners will be converted to [Him]." (Psalm 51:13, NASB) The purpose of a clean heart, the purpose of knowing the truth to the very core of my being, is to teach others and lead them to the same free gift of salvation that will deliver them from evil into the glorious throne of our Almighty God.
What person or group of people have we determined to be worthless of receiving the gospel? How do we acquire this depth of knowledge so that mercy reigns in our life and we are able to lead others down that same path of righteousness? It is the Word of God and the Holy Spirit leading us into all truth that has the power to change our hearts. (See Ephesians 5:26 and John 16:13.) Daily Bible study, prayer and scripture memory play vital roles in changing our hearts. My prayer is that we no longer withhold that gift from those we determine 'worthless', but as Christians each one of us grows in mercy so that we automatically respond to others with love and truth
