Oh, how I hate to make it to the family reunion each year. I’d rather not see several relatives—including a few in my immediate family. I loathe answering questions for nosy relatives. I detest trying to pass inspection, which can even include the food you bring. Laughter can be sweet if it’s not directed at me. It is a daunting afternoon.

Sometimes, it’s a perfect summer day and I can spend my time outside. If it’s raining, I’m a captive audience for whoever snares me. I feel like the last one standing in a dodge ball game. If they can see me, they can hit me and I will be out. Why do I feel like an ant under a magnifying glass at the reunion? I find it hard to bear the intense scrutiny. The exam is rarely passed. Imperfection is unacceptable in their eyes.

About the time I’m ready to run home, I find myself with that handful of people I want to squander my afternoon with. I head outside for a bit of quiet and run into them calmly chatting. I utter the next sentence in the conversation, even though the interruption transpired a year ago. We resume our chat until it’s tabled. We will take it up the next time we meet. It’s a joy because there we really want to know. We’re not only telling but hearing a story too. It’s a lovely afternoon with the dearest of friends. Oh, how I long to make it to the family reunion each year.
