I step out of the taxi, pay the man, and walk to the door, I am being expected, but no one knows when. My knuckles rap on the door, it is opened a millisecond later and as I step through the doorway, faces greet me in laughter, smiles, and congratulations. I am embraced in a tight hug by an old friend and my family. Children smile and clamber for me to play with them. Laughter is the heaviest presence here, nothing exceeding it, even the quietest person there was smiling just from watching the children enjoy themselves. No one here is arguing, a perfect reunion.
The smells from the kitchen wafting out into the open air. The smells of unity and food mixed together, I can see the smells drifting throughout the room and into my nose. I can smell mom’s turkey, grandma’s pies, and my sister’s bread. The turkey baked under the oven’s glow, baking the spices in it and creating a seasoned smell. The apple, cherry, and blackberry pies intertwining to create a sweet mixed fruit smell. The fresh bread coming out of the oven and calling everybody to it, called the knife and butter along too. The individual smells combining together and creating a sweet smelling aroma, that no one could deny or resist.
The children scream and chase each other in the backyard, not single fight or argument, just peace. The teens behave and begin to help the adults with preparations; today is the day that I return home from war. Fifteen months of fighting has created a reason for this great celebration. A return home, after seeing war and struggle, to return a place of peace and not worry about bombs exploding near you. To see all my loved ones, my mom, dad, sisters, aunts and uncles, grandparents, and cousins. Peace can envelope you like a tsunami after watching a war, not just watching but also being in that war.
I have fought valiantly for my country, I waited weeks for that letter to come through, I have seen the tragedy and violence that only happens through war. I created friendships and bonds, but not friendship is as strong as family. I know that this is family, this is my family’s home, and I have only just entered the door.
