“Could you please get out of the room so that I can sneak a cookie?” That was all five year-old Daniel asked. He thought it was a simple question. He was visiting his relatives and his aunt had just made a batch of cookies that morning. Daniel knew he wasn’t allowed to eat sugar, his mom had never told him why except that he would get sick, but rules were rules.
That afternoon it was just him and his older cousin, Sam, in the kitchen. That was when he asked the question. It was known that Sam was easily fooled, so Daniel, being five and not knowing what fooled meant, thought it meant he easily gave food. Or maybe it meant that if he was in the room with somebody, that somebody could get food easily himself. Either way Daniel knew he would get that cookie somehow, and now was his chance.
After Daniel asked the question, Sam looked at him stupidly for a second. “What?” He asked. “You want me to leave the room so you can eat a cookie?” He laughed. “Convenient way to do it. Well, at least you’re being honest.” He paused. Daniel thought he was about to say he could have one when he said, “Did your mom say you could have one? Lets go ask.”
“No! Don’t ask her! I…I already did. Sh…she said yes. She said I could have one!” He HAD to have that cookie, if he didn’t he would go insane.
“I don’t know.” Sam said. “Alright, I’ll go ask her and you can stay here. Okay?”
“No, she already s…” Daniel started to say, then realized exactly what Sam had said. “Sure. I’ll stay right here, I won’t move.” Sam left. Daniel attacked the plate of cookies. He wasn’t sure if Sam had suggested what he did on purpose or not, but he was happy none the less.
He picked out the biggest cookie with the most chocolate chips and bit into it. It was soooo good. His mouth exploded with the tastes. The chocolate chips were satisfyingly hard until they melted on his tongue. The cookie tasted like something he had never tried before. He took another bite, it was just like the first one. It was like heaven.
Just as he was swallowing the last piece, he heard foot steps coming down the stairs. He had had it. He succeeded. The cookie was the best thing he had ever tasted. Now he could survive until his mother gave him his treat that night.
Just as his mother entered the room followed by Sam, Daniel felt sick. His stomach clenched and Daniel fell over. Pain pierced his side. He grabbed it and started to cry.
“Daniel? What’s the matter?” His mother asked. She looked at Sam.
“I don’t know. He was fine when I left him.” Daniel cried harder. Then the cookie came back up.
His mother gasped. “Oh Daniel, why did you eat that cookie? I thought I told you not to. Sam take him up to the bathroom and tell your mother to come hear. Daniel may be sick for a while.”
