TITLE WE ARE NOT ALONE

I watched the movie “Seven Alone,” twice and each time tears ran down my cheeks. I was fascinated because it is true story of a family making the westward journey to find a better future. Thousands in our land have moved to the west in search of gold and more fertile land. Those who went before brought back tidings of joy and wealth so many young families moved westward to Oregon and California. This family with six children, the 7th on the way, their belongings and livestock joined the trail.

The part that touched my heart was how the big brother John took over when Mom and Dad passed away. He watched over his six siblings like a hawk, especially his infant baby sister. John did not give up when faced with problems but encouraged his brothers and sisters to keep up the vision of his parents. John trusted God and prayed for help along the journey. It was fascinating to watch the seven move up the snowy mountains helping and caring for each other especially the baby. The Lord being their helper they made it to the west.

My parents believed in having a large family because they believed that God’s blessings are displayed when their quiver is full. Being the eldest of many children I felt like John on every occasions. Playing pranks with the younger ones was fun provided I did not get caught. Being taller and smarter you get to be ahead of the game when parents announce there are chores to be done. Yet when someone gets hurt the substitute nurse steps in till Mom arrives. The fun and joy that comes when siblings grow up together words cannot express. Our parents trained us to care and share, always giving respect to others. It was so much easier for us to adjust socially in school and community because we had learned to wait for our turn. Bible study and family devotions have gone a long way in binding us together with chords that cannot be broken.

Recently for Mother’s 90th birthday we siblings sat around and counted God’s blessings amid all the festivities. Even though separated by miles and occupations it is so encouraging to know that we are loved and we are not alone.

Playing the role of big brother is never easy. Joy is when our siblings can come together to have Bible study and family devotions, and to have parents who trained them to care and to share, giving respect one to another. Few, however, in real lives get to experience such closeness and bond with siblings, so if you have them, treasure them, for these are great blessings from God. Thank you for sharing this story.

I have eight children and I know that they enjoyed all that came with a big family, even the hard times.

My mother is the eldest of a family of ten and I feel so blessed by my wealth of Aunts and Uncles. Thankyou for sharing this experience of a large family.
