My Dad did all kinds of fun things with us kids. We went cross-country skiing and pulled along a sled with cube steaks to cook out in the open. He took us hunting at a very early age and taught us the lore and the care of wildlife. In the winter, we also skated a lot and we loved to go ice fishing on the lakes of Minnesota.
My Dad also taught us some important lessons for living. Always be honest, sometimes taught the hard way. I remember as a kid I swiped something from a grocery store and my Dad took me right back there and I had to confess what I did and return the candy bar.
Always be helpful, he taught this to my by example. My Dad and I were riding the streetcar home on one occasion and we spotted a neighbor mom and her small daughter. The little girl was sick and threw up. My Dad gave me his clean hankie and told me to go up and give it to the girl. I just hung my head so my Dad brushed past me and gave the girl the hankie himself. The next day the mom came to our house and brought the clean, ironed hankie back to my Dad. He never said anything to me about that but to this day; I keep a clean hankie in my back pocket.
